Septic Care Tips for Every Season | AAA Pumping Service Inc.

Your septic tank takes care of your waste year-round, so you should also provide it with year-round care and maintenance. Only flushing toilet paper and never pouring grease down the drain are great ways to keep your septic system in good condition, but you should also engage in some more specific septic care tips for each season.

Spring

Spring is a time for cleaning and renewal, and your septic tank is no exception.

Flush Herbicides

If you have ever had trouble with roots growing into your septic tank or associated pipes, then you should flush an herbicide down the drain. Slowly flush two pounds of copper sulfate down your toilet twice over a two-week period. This herbicide will help prevent root growth without damaging your tank. Do not rinse the herbicide down a sink drain as it can damage metal pipes - only put it down the toilet.

Schedule Pumping

Spring is a great time to pump your septic tank. The soil tends to be softer at this time of year, making it easier for your septic company to dig up the tank. Plus, you will make sure your tank is clean and able to handle the excess waste from all of your upcoming summer parties.

Choose Milder Cleaners

When you do your spring cleaning, choose milder, natural cleaners. Too much bleach, drain cleaner, and other harsh chemicals can kill off the bacteria in your septic tank, which are necessary for breaking down solid waste.

Summer

With summer comes pool parties and backyard barbecues. Discover some ways to make sure the fun does not wreak havoc on your septic system.

Don't Allow Parking on the Drainfield

The drainfield is the portion of your yard into which the septic tank empties. Make sure party guests do not park in this part of the yard, as heavy vehicles can compact the soil and make the drainfield less effective.

Warn Guests What Not to Flush

Consider making a cute sign for your bathroom that reminds guests of your septic tank and that they should not flush anything other than toilet paper.

Fall

When the leaves start falling, prepare for cooler weather. Make sure your septic tank is ready.

Flush Herbicide Again

Fall is the perfect time of year to do a second application of copper sulfate herbicide. Some types of trees experience a burst of root growth in fall, so protect your tank at this time.

Replant Grass

If any grass is missing from your drainfield area, now is a good time to replant it. Scatter the grass seed a few weeks before the first frost to make sure it has time to germinate and develop.

Winter

In winter, the holiday season arrives and brings with it many house guests. To keep your septic tank working throughout the chilly season, keep the following tips in mind.

Space Out Showers

Make sure you space out your showers, especially when you have overnight guests. Your septic tank may not be large enough to handle shower water from so many extra people. Scheduling your showers and spacing them out will keep your backyard from getting too wet.

Watch What Goes Down the Drain

When you cook for a large number of people or you have guests who help you cook, you can easily slip up and accidentally put something down the drain that should have been thrown away. To avoid any serious damage, make sure everyone knows not to put grease down the drain.

If you have a garbage disposal, use it very judiciously. The food waste from a few big holiday meals could fill up your tank prematurely, leading to the need for early pumping.

Follow these tips, and your septic tank should keep working well all year long. If you need to schedule a pumping appointment or inspection, contact the experts at AAA Pumping Service Inc.
